Visit Washington’s Landing, A Uniquely Pittsburgh Gem
Washington’s Landing has come a long way in the last 30 years. Formerly known as Herr’s Island, the oval piece of land that rests in the middle of the Allegheny River with sweeping downtown views used to be home to pungent factories and mills, and was not exactly the kind of island you’d head to for a night out. Much has changed since the 1980’s, and now Washington’s Landing – named after a much-circulated story about George Washington himself crashing on the land for a night after losing his raft during the French and Indian War – is home to its own marina and boathouse, waterfront restaurant, and luxury residential and commercial real estate.
Luckily for us at The Cork Factory, Washington’s Landing is an easily accessible neighborhood gem. A quick (and beautiful) walk from our community brings you over the pedestrian bridge and onto Washington’s Landing, where you have access to a full day of activities. If you’re craving time on the water, head over to Three Rivers Rowing Association and find out about how you can get involved in their many recreational and competitive rowing leagues and events. If you’re up for more exercise to complement your walk, embark on a trek through the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, a 24-mile nonlinear trail that leads you through Pittsburgh’s diverse riverfront neighborhoods. After a long day of exploring the island, step inside Redfin Blues for a drink and a bite to eat. You’ll feel like you’re on a beach vacation while sitting out on the patio overlooking the river with a menu full of cocktails, seafood, and classic summertime fare. Check out their websitefor hours and special happy hour deals.
While we may not be a seaside town, Pittsburgh’s riverfronts give us city-dwellers access to waterfront views, exciting aquatic sports, and the best in outdoor summer fun. Get out and visit our island neighbor, Washington’s Landing this summer and take advantage of this unique Pittsburgh gem. See you out there!
