Step Inside Contemporary Craft
While the Strip District itself may seem like a work of art, there is one place in particular where locals can marvel at cutting-edge exhibitions featuring international, national, and regional artists.
Located just steps away from our Pittsburgh apartments, Contemporary Craft serves as an artistic escape for residents of The Cork Factory.
On May 16th, this nationally recognized visual arts organization will be hosting a meet and greet for apartment residents in the Strip District! Stop by and become familiar with this community gem and bond with fellow neighbors over inspiring displays. The event will include a tour of the current exhibition, Visual Voices: Truth Narratives, as well as ceramic works from 37 national and international artists. Light refreshments of wine and soft drinks will also be provided. The meet and greet will run from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
Before you head over, here's a little background on the unique, artistic venue.
What is Contemporary Craft?
When Contemporary Craft was established in 1971 by founder Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael, its original intention was to create a space for emerging artists to exhibit and sell their work. Since then, it has grown to become so much more. Expanding from one gallery to three, Contemporary Craft now offers more space for regional, national, and international artists. Located in the historic produce terminal building since 1986, it has been a cultural anchor in the neighborhood and continues to produce hundreds of exhibitions, operate a distinctive retail store, and provide artistic guidance in the education center, The Studio.
Educational opportunities are plentiful at Contemporary Craft’s studio, where you can get hands-on training by local and visiting artists. While visiting one of the exhibits is a great way to appreciate art, nothing truly gives you the chance to do that more than expressing your creative side by making your own masterpiece. Regardless of your skill level, these classes will allow you to learn different mediums of art, including metals, woods, mixed media, and more. The team at Contemporary Craft understands the positive impact that art provides, which is why they partner with local organizations and museums to make art accessible to everyone. They also offer a variety of outreach programs for at-risk homeless children and families as well as residents of assisted living facilities. And, if you invite them, they will come to you and bring hands-on educational activities to your community!
