Did you know that Wigle is just down the street from our Strip District apartments? This Pittsburgh-based distillery has made it their mission to create high-quality, innovative spirits all while supporting local agricultural and celebrating history. Family owned-and-operated, Wigle opened its doors to the public in March of 2012, a few months after becoming an operational distillery, and two years after beginning the process of lobbying to amend state laws that formerly prohibited this type of on-premise craft distillery. Since 2012, Wigle has won four consecutive awards from the American Craft Spirits Association and remains the most awarded craft whiskey distillery in the country.
While Wigle is groundbreaking in its own right, the tradition of distilling in Pittsburgh goes back centuries. Throughout the 1700 and 1800s, Western Pennsylvania led the country in whiskey production. In fact, Wigle was named after one of the leading distillers of the area, Phillip Wigle. The distillery’s founders are proud to bring this tradition back to the region, and take great care to ensure that their ingredients are organic and locally sourced whenever possible.
A visit to the Wigle distillery offers a chance to walk through history with guided tours that focus on both the production of spirits as well as the story of Pittsburgh’s Whiskey Rebellion. You’ll also get a complimentary cocktail and a chance to taste several different iterations of Wigle’s award-winning product.
For a laid-back, sit-down experience, you can head straight to their tasting room at the Strip District location, or sit outside at the Barrelhouse and Whiskey Garden just across the river. Their well-versed bartenders mix up delicious concoctions and are always happy to educate interested imbibers on their craft selection. Both locations often enjoy visits from favorite local food trucks, including Mezza Luna Café, Cousins Maine Lobster, and Gaucho Asado Wagon.
For more information on events like Cocktail Class and Mystery Tasting Lab, tours of both the distillery and barrelhouse, hours, menus, and history, check out Wigle’s page. You can also join their Whiskey Club, or purchase their spirits for delivery right to your doorstep. Enjoy!
